While visiting Las Teresitas beach around 5pm on returning home her taxi gets stopped by the police who questions her, checks her purse, etc. They take her to her hotel to verify the story. In the end no apology just warn her not to be alone next time. To be fair she didn't have the ID on her, it was at the hotel but most people would not take their ID when going to the beach. I'm guessing they must've thought she was a prostitute or something though she was wearing normal long pants autumn clothes.
Is this something that regularly happens in Santa Cruz or Tenerife in general? It is very shocking to hear police questioning a woman for being alone in a touristic place in EU and in !
Women travel alone all the time in traditional parts of Tenerife, so your girlfriend's experience sounds highly unusual. The car park at Teresitas has been targeted by petty thieves in the past so it could be possible the police there are on the lookout for people who fit a certain profile. Checking her purse and querying the amount of money she's carrying seems to fit that theory, especially combined with her not having ID as, I'm sure you already know, it's the law to carry ID in Spain at all times.
